Disabled Rehabilitation and Research Association (DRRA) and Daily Bhorer Kagoj organized a Round Table on the Role of Mass Media towards achieving SDG Goal 3: Good health and well-being for persons with disabilitieon December 20, 2016 at the Conference Room of Daily Bhorer Kagoj, Farida Yesmin, Executive Director of DRRA, Shyamol Datta, Editor of Daily Bhorer Kagoj, Dr. Faruk Ahmed Bhuiyan, Line Director, Non-communicable Disease Control (NCDC) DG Health, Dr. Muhammad Zillur Rahman Khan, Assistant Professor, National Institute of Mental Health, A F M Mayeen, Head of Finance, Sightsavers International, Nazaran Yasmin Hira, Program Manager Manusher Jonno Foundation and journalists from Print and Electronic Media were present  and spoke on the occasion. Rashed Ali Senior Reporter Bhorer Kagoj presented Keynote paper.

Farida Yesmin, the Executive Director of DRRA highlighted that more than 15 million people are persons with the disabilities, without ensuring their health facility SDGs could not be achieved. More allocation is required for health, infrastructure development in the national budget for creating a positive environment for persons with disabilities. Awareness raising is very important and mass media can play a significant role in this connection and consider the importance we have organized this roundtable discussion in cooperation with Bhorer Kagoj.

Nazrana Yeasmin, Program Manager Manusher Jonno Foundation said we have seen some achievements of the government in some district and Upazila hospitals but the total situation is not like this. Most of the road, building are not accessible for the persons with disabilities. We should work closely to develop infrastructure for easy movement of persons with disabilities.

Dr. Muhammad Zillur Rahman Khan said that Bangladesh achieved a lot in the health sector but we have to do more for promoting health situation of Bangladesh and concerted effort is required. Persons with disabilities required for cooperation from us we have to extend our cooperation to them.

A F M Mayeen, Finance Manager, Sightsavers International mentioned that the persons with disabilities are the most vulnerable in our society mass media can play an important role. We are working for persons with disabilities since 2007 but we have seen due to lack of awareness the persons with disabilities are facing untold sufferings. Policy makers should more concentration on this issue. Now community clinic is being played a vital role in providing services at community level. The government should provide all types of support for the community people especially for persons with disabilities.

Dr. Faruque Ahmed Bhuyian, Line Director, NCDC of Directorate of Health Services mentioned our average life longevity is 71 years. Due to increasing our average life longevity, some physical problems have to face by the elderly people. But the government is working on the issue but we have to ensure health services for a huge number of population. We have to use the capacity of persons with disabilities who are differently able.  

Shyamol Datta, Editor Bhorer Kagoj services to be provided all people of the community with special emphasis on the persons with disabilities. Policymakers to be understood the situation of persons with disabilities a capacity building of the doctor for identification and prevention is important and policy makers should take necessary steps in this regard.

Journalists from Print and Electronic Media, NGO representatives were present and spoke on the occasion. Farida Yesmin, Executive Director, DRRA presided over the round table while Shyamol Datta moderated the program.
