The Training of Trainers (ToT) for Doctors on `Disability identification and prevention’ was held on 18th, 23rd and 25th June 2016 respectively at the training room of Bangladesh University of Health Science, Mirpur, Dhaka organized by Non-Communicable Disease Control (NCDC), DGHS and supported by Disabled Rehabilitation & Research Association (DRRA). A total of 75 government doctors including 18 female from 9 Upazilas of three districts namely Satkhira, Manikgonj and Chittagong participated.
Professor AHM Enayet Hussain, Additional Director General (Planning & Development), Directorate General of Health Services, was inaugurated the training. The welcome address was delivered by Dr. Abdul Alim, Deputy Program Manager, NCDC and Debesh Das, Assistant Director, Program, DRRA in the inaugural session of the training.
Dr. Muhammad Zillur Rahman Khan, Assistant Professor Department of Child, Adolescent and Family Psychiatry, National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), Dr. Mithila Faruque, Assistant Professor, Bangladesh University of Health Science (BUHS) and Dr. Nahid Ferdousi, Assistant Professor, National Institute of Ophthalmology (NIO) were present as resource persons at the training.
The ToT provided the training on different topics including the definition of disability, types, current global and national scenario on disability, its impact on overall development and importance of early identification & management, and mainstreaming the people who suffering from the disability. The session to session discussions was held with the special emphasis on basic statistics on disability, risk factors, the provisions and consequences of Disability Protection Act 2013, Neuro-developmental disorders and Autism, Mental Retardation and disability due to mental disorders and other related issues in the training.
After the ToT, the trainee doctors will provide trainings to the health workers of the district hospitals, Upazila Health Complex and community clinics. The people with disabilities and at risk of disabilities will be benefitted by receiving disability inclusive services from the government health service providers. The training was successfully concluded with a concluding remark by the Deputy Program Manager of NCDC, Dr. Abdul Alim.
